What is a Vision Board?
A vision board is a collection of images and words that symbolize your goals, dreams and visions of success for what you want to accomplish. Visualization is an important part of achieving what you want in life – whether that be accomplishments at work, material items or even experiences.
Getting Started – Focus on What YOU Want
Typically, a vision board is created on a 20" x 30" poster board or another fun, creative surface. Your chosen images are glued to the board to represent your ambitions for the coming year. I suggest pulling pictures and words from magazines or other print images you find on the internet to symbolize your goals. Remember: there's no right or wrong way to create a vision board; just make sure the concepts speak to you and you are clear on your intention of your selections. We all need to plant the seeds to our future and now is the time to do it!
Be Specific
After you identify your goals, find images and words that represent them. Do you want to move to the next step in your career? Travel? Be healthier? Find words or symbols that reflect these ideas! For example, you could…
- Find your company logo and a picture of an actual ladder to represent a promotion and add these two images to your board
- Place a map or image of the world/US (or your chosen destination) that represents increased travel
- Think about how you want to look and feel, then find images/words that represent that feeling/look to you
Keep in mind of how you feel when you see these images/words – do they make you happy and inspired? If so, you are on the right track! Keep going and remember: dream big!
Tell a Friend
Studies have shown that we can achieve up to 75 percent of our goals when we identify them, write them down and tell a friend. The extra accountability of someone else knowing what you want to achieve can be the push you need to accomplish your goals!
Keep Your Vision Board Active
These boards are living projects – keep it active by placing it somewhere you can see it every day. I have a framed board that I put in front of my desk, and took a picture of it so I could keep it on my phone/computer for when I’m away from the office.
It's very important that it remains visible and active in both your conscious and unconscious experiences. As your dreams are realized, date it on the image on your board. At the end of the year, review your vision board and circle the images that manifested, so over time you have an on-going record of your fulfilled dreams.
When Should I Start?
Make this a priority. Plan to create your vision board with your family, friends or even your colleagues. It’s a great way to bond and can turn into a fun tradition for your kids to start identifying what is important to them through visuals.
Vision boards are a great and inspiring way for everyone to keep their goals in focus! Happy New Year and remember: dream big!
